TO EXPRESS THE SYMPATHY OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF THE LATE JIMMIE MCDUFFIE OF SUMTER.
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jimmie McDuffie, of Sumter, at the age of ninety-two; and
Whereas, Mr. McDuffie was a kind and generous man whose love of the community was experienced by every citizen of Sumter; and
Whereas, delivering Christmas presents to children in rural areas, making donations to local charities, civic organizations, and other causes were just some of the ways Mr. McDuffie served his community and the State of South Carolina; and
Whereas, constantly giving of himself, Mr. McDuffie was the founder of McDuffie Furniture, was known to make anonymous donations of furniture to City Hall, and was known locally for his philanthropy; and
Whereas, while he made great efforts to keep his donations a secret, Mr. McDuffie was honored in 1993 when then-Mayor Steve Creech honored him for donating more than $450,000 to the city for the construction of the West Liberty Street overpass at Swan Lake; and
Whereas, Mayor Creech declared the overpass to be named "McDuffie Crosswalk", forever honoring Mr. McDuffie and his charitable contributions; and
Whereas, because of the new overpass, the community was able to build play, parking, and picnic areas and a visitor's center on the northern side of the lake, which was previously difficult to access; and
Whereas, through his desire to facilitate an easier route to the northern side of the lake, Mr. McDuffie was able to help the city create a place for parents and children to spend time together and enjoy the beauty and serenity of Swan Lake; and
Whereas, a member of the Sumter City-County Planning Commission and the Salvation Army Board, Mr. McDuffie was also a past president of the Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Sumter Merchants Association, the South Carolina Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, the Sumter Red Cross, and the Friends of Swan Lake Garden; and
Whereas, Mr. McDuffie is survived by his wife, Tillie McDuffie of Sumter, a son, Angus McDuffie of Sumter, and a daughter, Mollie McDuffie Lunsford; and
Whereas, Jimmie McDuffie was a generous man with a big heart and his commitment and dedication to bettering other people's lives in Sumter will be sorely missed, but his philanthropic spirit will always be remembered. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their sympathy to the family and many friends of the late Jimmie McDuffie of Sumter.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Tillie McDuffie of Sumter.
