A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND RECOGNIZE THE STROM THURMOND HIGH SCHOOL REBEL REGIMENT FOR ITS OUTSTANDING WIN OF THE CLASS 3A LOWER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN OCTOBER 2005 AND TO WISH THE BAND ALL THE BEST IN UPCOMING COMPETITIONS.

Whereas, excelling as a marching band demands individual persistence, practice, and skill, as well as a unique ability to weave together distinct sounds to make a mellifluous whole; and

Whereas, honing those skills in countless practice sessions, band directors Barry Wash, Van Clark, and Dave Hill led the members of the Rebel Regiment of Storm Thurmond High School in Edgefield to finish the season with incredible accomplishment. The band also thrived under the leadership of student drum majors Justin Chaparro and Lamar Johnson; and

Whereas, music for the 2005 show was selected to portray a gangster's life in the 1920's, under the theme "Club Blue, A Gangster Chronicle"; and

Whereas, in their costumes of red and black pinstripe zoot suits with black fedoras, the Rebel Regiment Colorguard added to the intensity and drama of the presentation; and

Whereas, opening with a selection entitled "Main Street", the band quickly followed with selections "Hey Pachuco", a big band swing tune, and a love ballad called "Breathless". The show came to a powerful conclusion with the piece "The Chase"; and

Whereas, the hard work and dedication of the Rebel Regiment did not go unnoticed in various levels of competition throughout the season. The band received a superior rating and second place at the White Knoll Invitational in October and received an excellent rating at the Ridge View Tournament that same month; and

Whereas, making school history and defeating 16 other bands, the Rebel Regiment went on to win the Lower State Championship, and took home an impressive seventh place finish at the Class 3A State Championship; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate take great pride in honoring the young people of the Strom Thurmond High School Rebel Regiment for their commitment and enthusiasm in playing their instruments, both as individuals and as a cohesive whole. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and recognize the Strom Thurmond High School Rebel Regiment for its outstanding win of the Class 3A Lower State Championship in October 2005 and wish the band all the best in upcoming competitions.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Barry Wash, Van Clark, and Dave Hill, band directors of the Strom Thurmond High School Rebel Regiment.
