VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO DECLARE APRIL 22, 2006, "PALMETTO PROMISE DAY" IN PROMOTION OF TEEN VOLUNTEERISM, HONORING THOSE WHO ALREADY MAKE LASTING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEIR COMMUNITIES BY VOLUNTEERING AND ENCOURAGING OTHER SOUTH CAROLINA YOUTH TO FOLLOW.
Whereas, volunteerism is at an all-time low among teens in our nation; and
Whereas, millions of volunteers nationwide already work in their communities, utilizing their time, talents, and energy every day to make a real difference in the lives of children, adults, and the elderly; and
Whereas, it is important to instill a sense of commitment and responsibility in the minds and hearts of South Carolina's youth and encourage them to reach out to those in need in their immediate community and beyond; and
Whereas, research shows that teens who volunteer are two times as likely to give back to their communities as adults; and
Whereas, Miss Caroline Arnette, a sophomore at Gilbert High School and the current Miss Charleston Teen, intends to carry her "Palmetto Promise" to other teens across South Carolina, coordinating volunteer projects with student organizations and church groups in every county in South Carolina; and
Whereas, Miss Arnette believes that giving of oneself in service to another empowers the giver and the recipient, and greater teen participation in volunteer projects would lead to a stronger future for South Carolina; and
Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is pleased to commend Miss Caroline Arnette for her worthy goal and joins her in encouraging all of South Carolina's youth to follow her lead in participating in the Palmetto Promise, giving of themselves for the betterment of their individual communities for today and for many years to come. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, declare April 22, 2006, "Palmetto Promise Day" in promotion of teen volunteerism, honoring those teens who already make lasting contributions to their communities by volunteering and encouraging other South Carolina youth to follow.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Miss Caroline Arnette.
