A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MRS. LUCILLE GILLIARD OF BERKELEY COUNTY FOR HER OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO HER FAMILY AND COMMUNITY, AND TO WISH HER THE VERY BEST UPON HER NINETY-SECOND BIRTHDAY.

Whereas, Mrs. Lucille Virginia Samuels Gilliard was born on May 12, 1914 in Bonneau, South Carolina to her proud parents, Isaac and Cecily Owens Samuels; and

Whereas, raised by her loving grandmother, the late Ms. Betsy Samuels, Mrs. Gilliard attended Berkeley County public schools; and

Whereas, as a young woman, she moved to Charleston to live with her aunt, and worked as a domestic worker; and

Whereas, during that time she met and was courted by her loving husband, the late Mr. Isaac Gilliard. Their romance led to a loving, fruitful marriage blessed by four children, nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; and

Whereas, the family settled in the Rosemont community and has been a permanent fixture there for almost fifty-seven years; and

Whereas, committed to her faith, Mrs. Gilliard has been a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church for the past sixty-seven years, where she served as a member of the Missionary Board and the Women's Auxiliary until her retirement; and

Whereas, living her life based on her personal motto, "May the work I've done speak for me", Mrs. Gilliard exemplifies a true missionary spirit and constantly gives of herself in helping others; and

Whereas, constantly considering others' needs before her own, she often visits the sick and shut-in, serving as a faithful friend and neighbor to all; and

Whereas, while not in church or helping those who need her, Mrs. Gilliard enjoys spending time in her garden and working in her yard; and

Whereas, the Berkeley County community and all who are fortunate enough to know Mrs. Gilliard have been bettered by her kind, gentle nature and come together to celebrate her amazing ninety-second birthday on May 18, 2006. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Mrs. Lucille Gilliard of Berkeley County for her outstanding contributions to her family and community, and wish her the very best upon her ninety-second birthday.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Lucille Gilliard.
