A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE SINCERE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF VERETTA JOHNSON SABB, PHD. OF GREELEYVILLE ON NOVEMBER 25, 2004, AND TO CONVEY THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Veretta Johnson Sabb, PhD. of Greeleyville on November 25, 2004; and

Whereas, Doctor Sabb was born June 6, 1952 in Birmingham, Alabama to Paul E. Johnson and the late Gustavia Royster Johnson; and

Whereas, Dr. Sabb, a civil engineer, earned both a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master of Arts Degree in Mathematics from the University of Alabama and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Florida; and

Whereas, throughout her educational pursuits, Dr. Sabb's dedication to her education and her commitment to excellence was recognized through her many honors and achievements, including Dean's List at the University of Alabama, being a McKnight Doctoral Fellow at the University of Florida and a Dwight D. Eisenhower Graduate Research Fellow at the Federal Highway Administration, membership in national engineering and mathematics honor societies, and membership in an engineering leadership honor fraternity; and

Whereas, Dr. Sabb's desire to educate and promote a quality education was exemplified by being named Teacher of the Year at Florida A & M University and by her extensive teaching experience, including teaching at Saint Augustine College in Raleigh North Carolina, University of Florida, University of South Carolina, College of Charleston, Sumter Area Technical College, Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina, and North Carolina A & T University; and

Whereas, Doctor Sabb was an admired and respected colleague and friend at South Carolina State University where she served as the Director of the Southern Rural Transportation Center, Executive Director of the Center of Excellence in Transportation, Associate Director of the University Transportation Center, and Program Coordinator of the National Summer Transportation Institute; and

Whereas, she was a faithful member of Good Hope Baptist Church where she was a church usher and deaconess; and

Whereas, Doctor Sabb was the beloved wife of Ronnie A. Sabb and the devoted mother of Whitney Sabb; she was beloved by her large extended family and is survived by her father, two brothers, four sisters; and

Whereas, Doctor Sabb was a respected member of her community and profession, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Now therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate Concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, express their sincere sorrow upon the death of Veretta Johnson Sabb, PhD. of Greeleyville on November 25, 2004, and express their deepest sympathy to her family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Doctor Sabb.
