VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF THE LATE ANDERSON NATIVE AND MAN OF LETTERS, GUY DAVENPORT.
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the passing on January 4, 2005, of Guy Davenport; and
Whereas, Guy Mattison Davenport, Jr., was born in Anderson on November 23, 1927, the younger child of Guy Mattison Davenport and Marie Fant Davenport, and younger brother of sister, Gloria Williamson, who resides in Anderson; and
Whereas, this Anderson native was an extraordinarily gifted individual - a "many-sided author, painter, teacher, and scholar" as he was described in his obituary in the New York Times; and
Whereas, Professor Davenport took his undergraduate degree at Duke University, where he studied art and majored in classics and English literature, won a Rhodes Scholarship in 1948 matriculating at Merton College, Oxford, where he wrote the first thesis on James Joyce to be accepted by the university and earned a degree in literature; and
Whereas, after a two-year stint serving in the United States Army's XVIII Airborne Corps, he began a long academic career that began at Washington University in St. Louis, with time out to earn a Ph.D. in English literature from Harvard University, then continued at Haverford College in Pennsylvania, and from 1943 until his retirement in 1991, at the University of Kentucky; and
Whereas, in 1963, he published his first book, "The Intelligence of Louis Agassiz: A Specimen Book of Scientific Writings" (Beacon) followed by four dozen books, including several he illustrated; and
Whereas, his intellectual gifts won him a wide following among serious scholars of the language and even brought him in 1990 a McArthur Foundation "genius" award; and
Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the House of Representatives to pause in their deliberations to note the passing of so distinguished a son of South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their sympathy to the family and many friends of the late Anderson native and man of letters, Guy Davenport.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Professor Davenport's beloved sister, Mrs. Gloria Williamson of Anderson.
