A HOUSE RESOLUTION

COMMENDING BRICK BAPTIST CHURCH FOR ITS LONG TRADITION OF CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE QUALITY OF LIFE ON ST. HELENA ISLAND AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA ON THE OCCASION OF ITS ONE HUNDRED FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION.

Whereas, Brick Baptist Church was built on St. Helena Island, South Carolina in 1855; and

Whereas, African-Americans worshipped in this church from its inception, assuming its leadership in the mid 1860's under its first African-American pastor; and

Whereas, Brick Baptist Church is the "mother church" on St. Helena Island, out of which a number of other churches have been organized; and

Whereas, Brick Baptist Church is a significant part of the rich history of St. Helena Island, not only because of its religious impact but as the site of the early classes for Penn School, now Penn Center, one of the first schools to offer an education to formerly enslaved African-Americans of the Sea Islands; and

Whereas, Brick Baptist Church celebrates its anniversary on Sunday, September 18, 2005, with related activities beginning March 6, 2005. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, commend Brick Baptist Church for its contributions to the quality of life on St. Helena Island and this State on the occasion of its one hundred fiftieth anniversary celebration.
