A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND HONOR COLLEEN HOLLAND YATES OF SUMTER UPON RECEIVING THE 2005 MARY MILDRED SULLIVAN AWARD FROM WINTHROP UNIVERSITY AND TO RECOGNIZE HER MANY YEARS AS A POLITICAL AND SOCIAL ACTIVIST.

Whereas, Colleen Holland Yates is a well-known political and social activist in Sumter who has maintained an intense loyalty to her beloved alma mater, Winthrop University, and has promoted the institution at every opportunity; and

Whereas, in April of 2005, she was named the recipient of the university's most prestigious honor, the Mary Mildred Sullivan Award, which rewards "contributions to the quality of life in your community and selfless dedication of time, energy, and talent in service to others"; and

Whereas, Ms. Yates graduated from Winthrop University in 1950 with a degree in home economics at a time when only women were allowed to be full-time students there, and the women had to wear uniforms; and

Whereas, she developed a great love for Winthrop and became a dedicated supporter of the school over the years. She has been the chief organizer of local Winthrop alumni meetings for years and never misses a reunion held every five years. She is the chair of the 60th reunion to be held in 2010; and

Whereas, Ms. Yates' service to Winthrop began after she came to Tuomey Hospital to take a position as assistant dietician. There she met the late Abbie Bryan who took her under her wing, and she developed into a most impressive organizer and true leader as a result; and

Whereas, she later became the head dietician at Lee County Hospital but never lost her enthusiasm for Winthrop and for her local community. Ms. Yates was introduced to public service as a member of the Junior Welfare League; and

Whereas, her impressive list of accomplishments includes her service on the Sumter City Council for twelve years, and her service as mayor pro tempore for three terms. She was the Census 2000 coordinator for the city and county, was a twelve-year member of the Sumter County Election Commission, and was on the board of the South Carolina Municipal Association and the Santee Lynches Council of Governments; and

Whereas, among the many community organizations Ms. Yates serves are the Sumter County Museum, Friends of Swan Lake, the Sumter County Historical Association, the Wateree AIDS Task Force, and the Historic Preservation Design Review Board; and

Whereas, currently among her chief interests is the preservation of Sumter's Historic District and establishing a network of women to become interested and engaged in politics, run for office, and to encourage other women to do the same; and

Whereas, additionally she is widely recognized and praised for forming The Forum, a civic group organized by Ms. Yates and others when the local Rotary Club would not admit women years ago. Ms. Yates organized an old-fashioned stump meeting every fall for twenty-three years in association with The Forum; and

Whereas, the lovely Ms. Yates was also the beloved wife of the late Ansley "Bubba" Yates whom she refers to as "a hometown boy" and together they were proud to raise four children: Ernest Franklin Yates, Charles Ansley Yates, Carolie Cecelia Yates, and Patricia Christine Yates Stewart; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives pause to reflect on the rich life and many and varied contributions that Colleen Holland Yates has made to her local community and the State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and honor Colleen Holland Yates of Sumter upon receiving the 2005 Mary Mildred Sullivan Award from Winthrop University and recognize her many years as a political and social activist.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Colleen Holland Yates of Sumter.
