A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 58-1-75 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT A UTILITY MAY NOT DISCLOSE CUSTOMER INFORMATION WITHOUT THE CONSENT OF THE CUSTOMER.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    Article 1, Chapter 1, Title 58 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 58-1-75.    A public utility may not disclose customer information to any party including any affiliate, marketing service, or third party unless the utility obtains consent from the customer. This section does not apply to any information that the utility is required by law to disclose."

SECTION    2.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
