TO RECOGNIZE, HONOR, AND COMMEND GREENWOOD NATIVE THE REVEREND DR. BENJAMIN J. GLOVER FOR HIS LIFETIME SERVICES AS A FATHER, PASTOR, EDUCATOR, AND COMMUNITY LEADER, AND TO CELEBRATE HIS NINETY-FIRST BIRTHDAY, AS WELL AS WISHING HIM MANY MORE TO COME IN THE FUTURE.

Whereas, the Reverend Dr. Benjamin J. Glover was born in Greenwood, South Carolina, as the son of the late Reverend Dr. Charles G. Glover and Queen E. Massey Glover; and

Whereas, from an early age he had the inspiration of becoming a pastor and, therefore, prepared himself for a lifetime of teaching and educating others about God by graduating from Wilberforce University and Payne Theological Seminary, as well as attending Union Seminary after having set his roots in education in the public school systems of Greenwood, South Carolina, Gastonia, North Carolina, and Cincinnati, Ohio; and

Whereas, Dr. Glover carried out his ministry throughout many churches in South Carolina serving as pastor at Mt. Lebonon in Due West, Chappelle Station in Columbia where he helped build Chappelle Memorial, and Morris Brown, Mother Emanuel in Charleston; he served as Presiding Elder of the Edisto District, Trinity and First AME in Spartanburg, and St. Paul in Sumter; and he also served as pastor at Quinn Chapel in Wilmington, Ohio; and

Whereas, he helped educate many of South Carolina's very own children as a public school teacher in Due West and as a professor of Bible literature and psychology at Allen University, where he was head of the Department of Practical Theology at Dickerson Theological Seminary and as a professor in charge of the Dickerson Theological Seminary Extension in Charleston; and

Whereas, Dr. Glover served twice as President of Allen University; and

Whereas, he served as a leader in many community organizations including serving as President of the Charleston and Columbia branches of the NAACP, President of the Interdenominational Minister's Union of Charleston and vicinity, member of the Board of Trustees of Allen University, member of the Executive Board and Board of Control of Allen University, and President of the Beta Mu Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity; and

Whereas, in the late 1940's, Dr. Glover was one of fifteen men who co-founded the Beta Chi Sigma, Columbia Alumni Chapter, Alpha Omicron at Allen University and Beta Mu Chapter at Benedict College. Kappa Iota also was started at the University of South Carolina as a result of his efforts; and

Whereas, he is a world traveler, having traveled extensively to many European countries such as Scotland, England, France, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, and Italy; and

Whereas, Dr. Glover was a fully devoted and compassionate husband to the late Lydia L. Wright Glover, a loving and caring father of three girls; Madrian G. Garrick, L. Oveta Glover, and Gail G. Faust, as well as three boys; Akil Khalif, Shawn DeWayne, and Vergil Dewey, and a supporting and loving grandfather of eight; and

Whereas, his hard work and great service as an educator, humanitarian, family man, churchman, and Christian have not gone unnoticed. On January 28, 2006, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., will pay tribute to Dr. Glover for his astonishing contributions to society and Phi Beta Sigma and congratulate him on his ninety-first birthday. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly recognize, honor, and commend Greenwood native the Reverend Dr. Benjamin J. Glover for his lifetime commitments and services as a father, pastor, educator, and community leader, and celebrate his ninety-first birthday, as well as wishing him many more to come in the future.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Reverend Dr. Benjamin J. Glover.
