A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE TECHNICAL SERGEANT DONTA L. TRAPPS OF SHAW AIR FORCE BASE FOR HIS OUTSTANDING COMMITMENT TO HIS CAREER, COMMUNITY, AND COUNTRY AND TO WISH HIM ALL THE BEST IN EVERY ENDEAVOR HE UNDERTAKES.

Whereas, it is with great pride that the House of Representatives honors those South Carolinians who tirelessly give of themselves in furtherance of this great State and Nation; and

Whereas, Technical Sergeant Donta L. Trapps is one such individual, as his life stands as a testament to the good that can be done by one man in the lives of countless others; and

Whereas, serving as a Utilities Systems Journeyman with the 20th Civil Engineer Squadron at Shaw Air Force Base, Technical Sergeant Trapps' work does not begin and end at the boundaries of the base. A dedicated volunteer, Trapps has served as a steadfast mentor for students, counseling them through various struggles, including drug and alcohol addictions; and

Whereas, when his squadron adopted Wilder Elementary School, teachers and school officials noted Trapps' ability to connect with even the most at-risk children, and began pairing him with some of the more difficult students. There he helped these children with their homework and motivated them to secure better futures for themselves in leading by example; and

Whereas, Technical Sergeant Trapps began a noteworthy pen-pal program with deployed troops and Wilder Elementary students, in which the students wrote over 100 letters to service personnel in Iraq. He also spearheaded a group that sought donations to purchase school supplies for Wilder students, which raised over $2000.00 for students in need; and

Whereas, developing a program to tutor and mentor troubled students at the Base Library, Trapps has overseen the mentoring of more than 150 children, accomplished by 52 tutors; and

Whereas, volunteering with the Sumter County Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, he also performs intake assessments for patients entering the Freedom House Detoxification Center; and

Whereas, Technical Sergeant Trapps has not gone unrecognized for his unmatched volunteerism, as he was awarded the 2005 Jones Chevrolet/L.A. Leasing Military Citizen of the Year Award by the Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives is proud to recognize such an outstanding individual for his steadfast love and commitment to his country and community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and recognize Technical Sergeant Donta L. Trapps of Shaw Air Force Base for outstanding commitment to his career, community, and country, and wish him all the best in every endeavor he undertakes.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Technical Sergeant Donta L. Trapps.
