A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE THE MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF DR. SAMUEL A. HUNTER ON THE OCCASION OF HIS EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HIM A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MANY MORE YEARS OF HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, Dr. Samuel A. Hunter was born in St. Petersburg, Florida, and reared in Tallahassee, Florida; and

Whereas, he attended the public schools of Leon County, Florida, and Florida A&M University Demonstration School, and graduated from Lincoln High School in Tallahassee, Florida; and

Whereas, he received both a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education and a Master of Arts degree in Supervision and Administration from Florida A&M University. He received a Doctorate in Education Administration from Nova University; and

Whereas, Dr. Hunter devoted two years of distinguished service to the United States Army with most of his tour of duty spent in the Pacific Theater of Operation; and

Whereas, he is married to the former Audrey B. Wilson of Tallahassee, Florida, and together they are the proud parents of five children, the doting grandparents of four grandchildren, and have one great-grandchild; and

Whereas, for thirty-seven years Dr. Hunter devoted his life to the field of public education which included service as a school teacher at the elementary, junior high school, and high school levels. He also was a basketball coach, baseball coach, and assisted with football. Additionally, he served as a principal at the elementary, junior high school, and senior high school levels. He also has held the positions of Director of Research/Evaluation and Chief Negotiator, Director of Employee Relations, and Assistant Superintendent for the State of Florida's Indian River County School District; and

Whereas, Dr. Hunter has been a very active member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. He has served the church in many capacities including service as a member of the General Board of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and Director of the Sunday School Superintendents of the Eleventh Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. In addition he has served as Parliamentarian for the South Florida Conference Lay Organization and the Eleventh Episcopal District Lay Organization, and was elected "Layman of the Year" for the African Methodist Episcopal Church during the 1995 Connectional Lay Convention; and

Whereas, recognizing him for his distinguished career in the field of education, Oslo Middle School in Indian River County, Florida, named its administration building in honor of Dr. Hunter on March 21, 1999; and

Whereas, it has come to the attention of the members of the House of Representatives that Dr. Hunter is the father of Dr. Terry K. Hunter, Professor of Art at Claflin University, and the father-in-law of our colleague and friend the Honorable Gilda Cobb-Hunter; and

Whereas, it is fitting and proper for the members of the House of Representatives to pause in their deliberations to recognize the many accomplishments of this amazing individual as he celebrates his eightieth birthday. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, recognize the many accomplishments of Dr. Samuel A. Hunter on the occasion of his eightieth birthday, and wish him a joyous birthday celebration and many more years of health and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Samuel A. Hunter.
