A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE DR. MIKE SULLIVAN, PROFESSOR OF ENTOMOLOGY AT CLEMSON UNIVERSITY'S EDISTO RESEARCH AND EDUCATION CENTER, BLACKVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA, ON HIS MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO PUBLIC EDUCATION.

Whereas, it is with great pride that the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives recognize those citizens who give tirelessly of themselves in educating and encouraging South Carolina's youth; and

Whereas, Dr. Mike Sullivan is certainly one such individual, as he has inspired countless numbers of young people throughout his extensive career at the Edisto Research and Education Center for over thirty years; and

Whereas, Dr. Sullivan has devoted thirty-three years of his career to the Edisto Research and Education Center helping to improve the livelihood of South Carolina citizens involved in cotton and soybean production based on his research in pest management; and

Whereas, he gained national recognition through professional society involvement, in particular, the Beltwide Cotton Conferences, and he served as a major advisor and mentor to numerous graduate students at Clemson University during his tenure; and

Whereas, Dr. Sullivan served as Interim Director of the Edisto Research and Education Center, providing leadership and direction to all faculty and staff for a period of three years; and

Whereas, he worked with gifted and talented students from Blackville-Hilda public schools on many different activities in mathematics and science; they learned from hands-on, real-life experiences, and they also won the Central Savannah River Area Science Forum Overall Science Award for Middle Schools in April 1998 under his leadership; and

Whereas, among his many accomplishments, Dr. Sullivan directed the gifted and talented students in a Host Plant Suitability Project that was showcased for excellence in science and math by the South Carolina Department of Education in 1995; and

Whereas, Dr. Sullivan also secured funding for the establishment of a butterfly garden at Macedonia Elementary School in Blackville, South Carolina, through Clemson University in May 1997, and he was instrumental in the development of an outdoor environmental laboratory at Macedonia Elementary School; and

Whereas, this talented educator is also the devoted husband of Wynnell Sullivan and the proud father of Carl, D. J., and Charles Sullivan. He is the son of Martha Sullivan and the late Jack Sullivan; and

Whereas, Dr. Sullivan is greatly respected and admired throughout the community; the Town of Blackville and the County of Barnwell are truly better places because of the generous contributions of his time, talents, energy, and resources; he is devoted to excellence in his work and his contributions to public education in the great State of South Carolina, and it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina House of Representatives pauses to acknowledge the many and varied contributions of Dr. Sullivan and to recognize his giving, caring, and service-oriented life. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Dr. Mike Sullivan, Professor of Entomology at Clemson University's Edisto Research and Education Center, Blackville, South Carolina, on his many years of dedicated service to public education.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Mike Sullivan.
