A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE HILLCREST HIGH SCHOOL IN GREENVILLE COUNTY FOR HAVING THE SPORTS TURF MANAGERS ASSOCIATION NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL FIELD OF THE YEAR AND TO HONOR DAVID BROOKS AND HIS SPORTS TURF MANAGEMENT STUDENTS FOR TAKING CARE OF ALL THE SCHOOL'S OUTSIDE ATHLETIC FACILITIES AND MAINTAINING THEM IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.

Whereas, in January 2006, Hillcrest High School in Greenville County was honored for having the Sports Turf Managers Association National High School Baseball Field of the Year; and

Whereas, the Sports Turf Managers Association Field of the Year Award program began in 1992 and awards the best field from five field types: baseball, football, soccer, softball, and complex, and three categories: professional, collegiate, and schools/parks; and

Whereas, a panel of five judges independently scores each entry based on the playability and appearance of the playing surfaces, innovative solutions employed, effective use of budget, and the development and implementation of a comprehensive, sound agronomic program; and

Whereas, Mr. David Brooks, an agricultural education teacher at Hillcrest, is the primary reason the school's baseball field was so honored; and

Whereas, Mr. Brooks has taught a sports turf management class for the last four years, and seventy-five percent of the students' time is spent working on the school's athletic fields; and

Whereas, the class uses each one of Hillcrest's outside athletic fields as a turf lab to perform experiments and receive hands-on training with managing fields; and

Whereas, several students from the class have graduated to pursue degrees in turf management, and some have hopes of a career managing either minor or major league fields; and

Whereas, most importantly, the students in Mr. Brooks' classes gain knowledge of how to be good stewards of the land in their own yards; and

Whereas, this award came about after members of the National Sports Turf Managers Association familiar with the accomplishments of David Brooks and his students, asked Mr. Brooks to apply for it; and

Whereas, after the first application for the prestigious award, Hillcrest High School was honored for having one of the best high school baseball fields in the country. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Hillcrest High School in Greenville County for having the Sports Turf Managers Association National High School Baseball Field of the Year and honor Mr. David Brooks and his sports turf management students for taking care of all the school's outside athletic facilities and maintaining them in excellent condition.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. David Brooks of Hillcrest High School.
