A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR GERALD KELLEY OF RICHLAND COUNTY FOR HIS OUTSTANDING COMMITMENT AND DEDICATION TO THE EDUCATION OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S YOUTH, AND TO WISH HIM ALL THE BEST UPON HIS RETIREMENT.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the General Assembly recognizes South Carolinians who selflessly give their time and energy in developing young minds in their communities; and

Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize the great achievements of those who teach and to encourage these individuals who continue to inspire children year after year; and

Whereas, Gerald Kelley, a biology teacher at Dreher High School in Richland County, truly deserves such distinction, as he has helped to shape countless lives in his incredible forty-year career in education; and

Whereas, Coach Kelley celebrates success both on the basketball court and in the classroom. He not only will be remembered for leading the Dreher High School girls' basketball team to the 1981 State Championship, and for his time working as a basketball coach at Eau Claire High School during NBA player Jermaine O'Neal's high school years, but also will live on in the minds and hearts of his many students in years to come after instilling the values of hard work and discipline in them; and

Whereas, showing great respect for his students and demanding the same in return, Coach Kelley leads by example in teaching life lessons that his students will turn to in facing difficult decisions to come; and

Whereas, in his years as an educator, Coach Kelley has given support, money, and shelter to countless students, opening up his home and heart to those who need it most; and

Whereas, emblematic of his drive to do the best he can for his students, a poster in his classroom reads: "Your teacher's goal is simple: to help you reach yours." Coach Gerald Kelley encourages his students to dream the impossible, but to work hard to get there; and

Whereas, Coach Kelley remains as dedicated to his students and to the furtherance of public education as he was when he began his career as an educator forty years ago, and the students of Dreher High School and the surrounding community are fortunate to have him in their lives. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Gerald Kelley of Richland County for his outstanding commitment and dedication to the education of South Carolina's youth, and wish him all the best upon his retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Coach Gerald Kelley.
