A BILL

TO AMEND SECTION 59-39-100, AS AMENDED, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO THE UNIFORM HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA, SO AS TO ALLOW A DISTRICT WHICH OFFERS A PROGRAM OF PUBLIC SERVICE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO DESIGNATE THAT A DIPLOMA IS AWARDED "WITH PUBLIC SERVICE" IF THE GRADUATE HAS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED AT LEAST FORTY HOURS OF PUBLIC SERVICE IN THE PROGRAM OFFERED BY THE DISTRICT.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    Section 59-39-100 of the 1976 Code, as last amended by Act 49 of 2005, is further amended by adding an appropriately lettered subsection at the end to read:

"( )    If a school district offers a program of public service for high school students and a student successfully completes at least forty hours of public service pursuant to that program, the district may designate on the diploma of the student meeting this qualification that the diploma is awarded 'with public service'."

SECTION    2.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor and applies for school years beginning after 2005-2006.
