A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR THE RICH HISTORY OF JERICHO UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IN COLLETON COUNTY AND TO RECOGNIZE THE EXTRAORDINARY CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE CHURCH'S LAITY AND CLERGY AS THE CHURCH OBSERVES THE TWO HUNDRED FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF ITS ANTECEDENTS.

Whereas, it is appropriate for the South Carolina House of Representatives to recognize the work and contributions of historic African-American churches that have served to provide spiritual encouragement, promote the Christian faith, and shape the lives of countless numbers over the generations; and

Whereas, in the years 1756-1800, blacks gathered under an oak tree in Colleton County for worship, but they could not call it a worship service for fear of their lives; and

Whereas, when Jericho Church began on a more formal basis in 1800, African-Americans were forced to steal away to worship. The first known spot for worship was at Bush Harbor. Two acres were eventually given to them to build a church and they were charged with the task of giving the building a biblical name. Mary Ann Mitchell and her sons, Willie, John, and Preston pulled and dried logs to build a pole building, which was called "Jericho Church"; and

Whereas, written pastoral records date to 1935, when Reverend Charles Halston was pastor and would travel to and from church mounted on a mule while being paid with vegetables and meat from the farms of parishioners; and

Whereas, a series of dedicated circuit-riding pastors followed as the church grew, with the church becoming Jericho United Methodist Church in the historic merger of Methodist congregations; and

Whereas, in 1981, the Methodist Conference donated ten thousand dollars with the charge that the sum be used to help with the construction of a parsonage; and

Whereas, in the intervening years, the church has grown and prospered, with ever improving facilities and expanded services and programs. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor the rich history of Jericho United Methodist Church in Colleton County and recognize the extraordinary contributions of the church's laity and clergy as the church observes the two hundred fiftieth anniversary of the founding of its antecedents.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the pastor and church staff of Jericho United Methodist Church.
