A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE SPARTANBURG HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS TRACK TEAM ON ITS OUTSTANDING WIN OF THE 2006 STATE AAAA TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP, AND TO HONOR THE ATHLETES AND THEIR COACHES, GLOVER L. SMILEY AND SHAY RICE, ON AN EXCEPTIONAL SEASON.

Whereas, excellence in track demands individual strength, agility, and skill, as well as team play and good sportsmanship; and

Whereas, using those talents and attributes, Coaches Glover Smiley and Shay Rice and the members of the Spartanburg High School Girls Track Team capped an impressive season by winning the 2006 Class AAAA State Track Championship; and

Whereas, defeating tough competitors to take the state title, these athletes remained calm and focused throughout the meet, finishing with a score of 91; and

Whereas, exhibiting excellent form and spirit, team members encouraged each other to perform their best to achieve individual awards and to secure victory for the school; and

Whereas, the Spartanburg High School girls took home the county and region championships before advancing to the final state meet; and

Whereas, the 400 meter relay team of Arnetra Frazier, Jasmine Grayson, Tysha Smith, and Patria Norman brought great pride to their families and school by placing first in their event. The 1600 meter relay team of Santresa Jamison, Danesha Edwards, Tysha Smith, and Jasmine Grayson also captured top honors; and

Whereas, other members of the incredible championship team included Sade Gray, Logan Peake, Kaela MacPhail, Erica Peake, Sequoya Casey, Chelsea Hicks, Roceana Jackson, Porshla Reid, and Natasha Woodruff; and

Whereas, the championship win could not have been possible without the tireless work of assistant coaches Tyrone Johnson, Robert Hipp, Doug Wynn, Jim Wood, and Rob Wilder; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives take great pride in commending the young women of the Spartanburg High School Girls Track Team for their tireless efforts and great determination in an incredible season and recognize them as veritable model student athletes. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate the Spartanburg High School Girls Track Team on its outstanding win of the 2006 State AAAA Track Championship, and honor the athletes and their coaches, Glover Smiley and Shay Rice, on an exceptional season.
