TO EXPRESS THE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF MRS. KRIS V. HOFFMAN OF RICHLAND COUNTY AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were saddened by the news of the death of Mrs. Kris V. Hoffman on Tuesday, March 14, 2006; and

Whereas, a devoted wife and family woman, Mrs. Hoffman shared a loving marriage with her husband of thirty-two years, Mr. Chris Hoffman, and adored her two sons, Todd and wife Anne Hoffman of Portland Oregon and Scott Hoffman of Greenville, South Carolina. She was also the doting aunt of her brother Ed Renn and his wife Nellie's three children, Jessica, Jennifer, and David Renn of Churchville, Pennsylvania; and

Whereas, a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Hoffman was the daughter of the late Edward and Virginia Woods Renn; and

Whereas, being one to never back down from a battle, she was a survivor of polio after being in an iron lung for over six months at the age of six; and

Whereas, her exciting teenage years in Philadelphia landed her on American Bandstand, where Kris came to know a great number of the bandstand "regulars"; and

Whereas, after graduating from Olney High School in 1963, she received her undergraduate degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1968; and

Whereas, Mrs. Hoffman began her career after college teaching in the Philadelphia school system before traveling on her first world adventure to California; and

Whereas, while experiencing the California sun, she taught first and second grade in the Rialto school system; and

Whereas, enjoying the young single life on the west coast, Kris became a go-go dancer for local bands and spent her summers in Hawaii and traveling through Europe with her roommates; and

Whereas, she met her husband in the spring of 1972, and on March 9, 1974, Kris and Chris were married and moved to Charlotte, North Carolina shortly thereafter, where she taught in the Mecklenburg County school system; and

Whereas, her first child, Todd, was born in 1976, and the family moved to Columbia in 1978 before her second son, Scott, was born in 1979; and

Whereas, after a few years staying at home raising two children, Kris went back to school in 1982 to teach French to preschool children; and

Whereas, in 1985, she briefly taught seventh grade ALERT before moving on to her true love of teaching elementary ALERT at Forest Lake Elementary School in Richland School District Two until 1990 when the family moved to Conway, Arkansas; and

Whereas, after a short stint out west, the family returned to Columbia in the fall of 1991, and Kris returned to teaching at Summit Middle School and then to North Springs, where she taught the fourth and fifth grade ALERT until retiring in the summer of 2005; and

Whereas, fulfilling her desire to further her education, she received her Masters degree in Curriculum and Education Development from Cambridge College in Boston, Massachusetts; and

Whereas, strong in her faith, Kris was extremely active in her church as Sunday School Superintendent, nomination committee member, Christcare, and recently started the prayer shawl ministry; and

Whereas, never losing her passion for adventure, Kris and her husband loved to travel with friends, going on cruises to the Caribbean, Europe, Hawaii, and Alaska; and

Whereas, always thinking of others, she was a dear friend to many, and as a kind and gentle woman, she was quick to smile when encountering friends old and new; and

Whereas, Kris was recently awarded "World's Greatest Mom and Wife" by her sons and husband, who will greatly miss her humor, warmth, love, and forever remember fondly her beautiful smile. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Mrs. Kris V. Hoffman of Richland County and extend their deepest sympathy to her family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Chris Hoffman.
