A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE REVEREND BOBBY L. SMITH, SR. OF RICHLAND COUNTY FOR HIS FIFTEEN YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE AS PASTOR OF ZION CANAAN BAPTIST CHURCH, AND TO WISH HIM ALL THE BEST IN THE COMING YEARS.

Whereas, the beloved son of Mrs. Dobie Smith and the late Mr. Willie Smith, the Reverend Bobby L. Smith of Richland County was born in Wheeler County, Georgia, and grew up in East Orange, New Jersey; and

Whereas, a devoted husband and family man, the Reverend Smith shares a loving marriage with his wife, Carolyn J. Smith, and adores his six children and eleven grandchildren; and

Whereas, the pastor bravely led a twenty-year career in service to his country in the United States Air Force; and

Whereas, steeped in biblical training, the Reverend Smith has studied at Moody Bible College, East Carolina University, El Paso Community College, and Macon Junior College. He also holds a B.S. Degree in Music from Fort Valley State University and a Master of Divinity Degree from The Interdenominational Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia; and

Whereas, he stands as the first black chaplain of the Warner Robbins, Georgia, Police Department and was the first black minister to become President of the Ministerial Alliance of Warner Robbins, Georgia; and

Whereas, licensed and ordained at New Hope Baptist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas, the Reverend Smith began his ministerial work while serving in the Armed Forces as an auxiliary chaplain in Germany, Montana, Guam, and Warner Robbins, Georgia; and

Whereas, before taking the pulpit at Zion Canaan Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina, he served the congregation of Union Grove Baptist Church in Warner Robbins, Georgia, from 1977 until 1991; and

Whereas, in his fifteen years as pastor of Zion Canaan Baptist Church, the Reverend Smith has inspired his congregation to grow both in their faith and in their membership. He has also seen to the renovation of the church sanctuary and to the construction of a new education building; and

Whereas, the Reverend Smith has also served as a tremendous mentor and friend to twenty-four ministers, eight of whom are women evangelists; and

Whereas, a true gift to Zion Canaan Baptist Church and its surrounding community, a scripture verse from Jeremiah 3:15 describes the great work he has done in the countless lives he has touched: "And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding." Now , therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Reverend Bobby L. Smith, Sr. of Richland County for his fifteen years of faithful service as Pastor of Zion Canaan Baptist Church, and wish him all the best in the coming years.
