A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE WINTHROP UNIVERSITY EAGLES OF YORK COUNTY ON THEIR STELLAR 2005 BASKETBALL SEASON, RIDING AN EIGHTEEN-GAME WIN STREAK ALL THE WAY TO A FOURTEENTH SEED IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP AND ENDING THEIR YEAR WITH THE BEST EAGLE EFFORT IN SCHOOL HISTORY.

Whereas, the 2005 version of Winthrop University Eagles of York County won twenty-seven regular season games, including their fifth Big South Conference Championship in seven years; and

Whereas, that effort from head coach Gregg Marshall's team included an eighteen-game streak of victories -- the best in the Nation -- and its first ever vote in the Associated Press' Top 25 Poll; and

Whereas, Coach Marshall garnered his third Big South Conference Coach of the Year honors, and players Torrell Martin and James Shuler made the all-conference team, along with Chris Gaynor's recognition on the all-freshman team; and

Whereas, Marshall and junior forward Shuler were selected Big South Coach and Player of the Year by College Insider.com; and

Whereas, the Eagles' top talent and teamwork earned them a fourteenth seed and a match-up with third-seeded Gonzaga in the National Collegiate Association Basketball first round in Tucson, Arizona; and

Whereas, although their respectable effort against Gonzaga came up short 74-64, the 2005 Eagles still finished with the Rock Hill University's best season ever in collegiate basketball, with a winning percentage of .818 and only six losses for the year; and

Whereas, these disciplined and determined athletes bring honor to our State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly congratulate the Winthrop University Eagles of York County on their stellar 2005 basketball season, riding an eighteen-game win streak all the way to a fourteenth seed in the first round of the NCAA championship and ending their year with the best Eagle effort in school history.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Head Coach Gregg Marshall
