CELEBRATING SIXTY YEARS OF TREE FARMING IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND SALUTING THE SOUTH CAROLINA TREE FARM PROGRAM.
Whereas, the State of South Carolina is celebrating sixty years of Tree Farming in 2006; and
Whereas, the American Tree Farm System is a nationwide program that gives public recognition to nearly sixty thousand private forest landowners who are managing their forests for wood, wildlife habitat, recreation, aesthetics, and clean water; the American Tree Farm System is sponsored by the nation's wood-using industries through the American Forest Institute with the assistance of forestry organizations, public agencies, consulting foresters, and others; and
Whereas, timber is the state's largest cash crop with a delivered value of 835 million dollars, and the total economic impact of South Carolina's forest products industry is 14.7 billion; and
Whereas, two-thirds, or 12.4 million acres, of South Carolina is forested; and
Whereas, seventy-four percent of South Carolina's forests are owned by family forest owners, sixteen percent by industry, five percent by the public, and five percent by the United States Forest Service; and
Whereas, the Sixtieth Anniversary of Tree Farming in South Carolina is an occasion deserving of special recognition. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, celebrates sixty years of Tree Farming in South Carolina and salutes the South Carolina Tree Farm Program.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the South Carolina Forestry Association and the South Carolina Tree Farm Committee.
