COMMITTEE REPORT

April 13, 2005

S. 271

Introduced by Senator Grooms

S. Printed 4/13/05--S.

Read the first time January 18, 2005.

THE COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION

To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (S. 271) to request the Department of Transportation to name the bridge that crosses Wadboo Creek along South Carolina Highway 402 in Berkeley County in honor of Jack B. Graves, and to install, etc., respectfully

REPORT:

That they have duly and carefully considered the same and recommend that the same do pass with amendment:

Amend the concurrent resolution, as and if amended, by striking the resolution in its entirety and inserting:

/    TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO NAME THE BRIDGE THAT CROSSES WADBOO CREEK ALONG SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 402 IN BERKELEY COUNTY IN HONOR OF B. JACK GRAVES, AND TO INSTALL APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THE BRIDGE CONTAINING THE WORDS "B. JACK GRAVES BRIDGE."

Whereas, B. Jack Graves lived in the community of Macedonia in Berkeley County since moving to the area in 1958; and

Whereas, upon returning from service in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, Mr. Graves began a career with the South Carolina Department of Highways and Public Transportation; and

Whereas, after years of training, he became the Bridge Inspection Engineer for District Six in 1971; and

Whereas, Mr. Graves was responsible for maintaining over 1,100 bridges in the counties of Berkeley, Beaufort, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, and Jasper, inspecting each at least once every year; and

Whereas, his examination responsibilities required him to cover over 2,600 miles a month, sometimes performing the dangerous task of climbing bridges in all types of weather conditions; and

Whereas, Mr. Graves tirelessly preformed this service to ensure our bridges were safe for travelers; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are proud to honor his contributions to the State of South Carolina by naming one of the many bridges he was responsible for maintaining in his honor. Now therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, request the Department of Transportation to name the bridge that crosses Wadboo Creek along South Carolina Highway 402 in Berkeley County in honor of B. Jack Graves, and to install appropriate markers or signs at the bridge containing the words "B. Jack Graves Bridge."

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation and to the family of B. Jack Graves.        /

Renumber sections to conform.

Amend title to conform.

W. GREG RYBERG for Committee.
