A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME HARDY STREET IN DILLON AS "LILIA MCRAE ROAD" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS ALONG THIS STREET THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS "LILIA MCRAE ROAD".

Amend Title To Conform

Whereas, Mr. Lilia McRae was a role model and respected leader in Dillon County for many years, and made an indelible impact on the many lives that he touched throughout his lifetime; and

Whereas, he served as a deacon at Hazy Grove Baptist Church for more than forty years. As a deacon, he listened to the problems of others and took time to help all who were in need; and

Whereas, Mr. McRae was one of the first African American sheriff deputies in Dillon County and strove to break all racial barriers in his beloved county; and

Whereas, as a little league baseball coach, he not only taught the game of baseball to youngsters, but also imparted life skills to the youngsters he coached; and

Whereas, he was respected and adored by many members in his community, especially the youngsters; and

Whereas, even though he departed this earth on February 25, 1999, his legacy lives on; and

Whereas, it is fitting and proper for the members of the General Assembly to create a lasting memorial in honor of one of the Palmetto State's finest citizens. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name Hardy Street in Dillon as "Lilia McRae Road" and erect appropriate markers or signs along this street that contain the words "Lilia McRae Road".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
