A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE PINEWOOD PREPARATORY SCHOOL MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM OF SUMMERVILLE ON ITS IMPRESSIVE WIN OF THE 2006 SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION AAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, AND TO HONOR THE PLAYERS AND THEIR COACH, PAT EDISON, ON AN EXCEPTIONAL SEASON.

Whereas, true excellence in basketball demands individual strength, agility, and skill, as well as team play and good sportsmanship; and

Whereas, using those talents and attributes, Coach Pat Edison and the members of the Pinewood Preparatory School Men's Basketball Team of Summerville finished their best-ever 29-2 season by winning the AAA SCISA State Championship; and

Whereas, the state championship win marks the twenty-second consecutive win for Pinewood, with this season's title its first since 1998; and

Whereas, defeating arch-rival Porter Gaud to take the state title, players stayed calm and focused in a close game, ending Porter Gaud's three-year state championship reign; and

Whereas, in addition to the ultimate title, the team boasts both SCISA Region I AAA regular season champion and tournament champion distinction; and

Whereas, standouts Matthew Simmons, John Campbell, and Ryan Steed earned both all-region and all-state honors. Freshman Milton Jennings earned all-region honors and also was named High School Sports Report Freshman of the Year, while his teammate, Matthew Simmons was named Region Player of the Year; and

Whereas, Head Coach Pat Edison showed a remarkable amount of confidence in the players and their individual and collective abilities, continually pushing them to perform at the highest level possible. His extraordinary dedication led to his being named Region Coach of the Year and High School Sports Report SCISA Coach of the Year; and

Whereas, other valuable members of the team include Hunter Smith, David Gaskins, Tore Davidsen, Jay Williams, Johnny Corella, Miles Reeves, Chance Blackwell, Kenny Manigault, and Malcolm Reed; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly take great pride in commending the young men of the Pinewood Preparatory School Men's Basketball Team for their tireless efforts and great determination in an outstanding season and recognize them as veritable model student athletes. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate the Pinewood Preparatory School Men's Basketball Team of Summerville on its impressive win of the 2006 South Carolina Independent Schools Association AAA State Championship, and honor the players and their coach, Pat Edison, on an exceptional season.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the players, coaches, and school officials of the Pinewood Preparatory School Men's Basketball Team on the House floor at a time and date to be determined by the Speaker.
