TO AMEND CHAPTER 5 OF TITLE 59 OF THE 1976 CODE, BY ADDING SECTION 59-5-72, TO ESTABLISH THAT THE START DATE FOR ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS OF THIS STATE MUST NOT BE SET EARLIER THAN AUGUST 25TH OF EACH YEAR AND TO PROVIDE THAT THE SCHOOL END DATE MUST NOT BE SET MORE THAN SEVEN DAYS AFTER THE LAST DAY OF THE PALMETTO ACHIEVEMENT CHALLENGE TEST.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Chapter 5 of Title 59 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 59-5-72. (A) In establishing a start date for the elementary and secondary instructional school year, the State Board of Education, the local school districts, or any other body designated to set the instructional school year start date must not establish a date earlier than August 25th of each year.
(B) In establishing an end date for the elementary and secondary instructional school year, the State Board of Education, the local school districts, or any other body designated to set the instructional school year end date must not establish a date later than seven days after the last day of administration of the Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
