A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO NAME THE SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 9 BY-PASS IN HORRY COUNTY THE "JAMES P. STEVENS, SR. MEMORIAL BY-PASS" AND TO ERECT APPROPRIATE SIGNS OR MARKERS ALONG THIS HIGHWAY CONTAINING THE WORDS "JAMES P. STEVENS, SR. MEMORIAL BY-PASS".

Whereas, the late State Senator James Price Stevens was born in the town of Loris on April 4, 1920, and was the son of the late M. D. and Lalla (McQueen) Stevens; and

Whereas, Senator Stevens received his bachelor of legal letters degree from the University of South Carolina in 1952; and

Whereas, he and his wife Madeleine Zabelicky raised four children; and

Whereas, Senator Stevens was a faithful member of Loris Methodist Church where he taught the Men's Bible Class; and

Whereas, he was a member of the Masons, VFW, American Legion, Phi Alpha Delta Fraternity, Law School Honor Council Debate Team, Wig and Robe, and in 1952 served as President of the University of South Carolina Law School Student Body; and

Whereas, Senator Stevens was a distinguished member of the South Carolina General Assembly, having served in the Senate for twenty-one years;

Whereas, it would be fitting and proper for the members of the South Carolina General Assembly to have the South Carolina Highway 9 By-Pass in Horry County named in his honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, request that the Department of Transportation name the South Carolina Highway 9 By-Pass in Horry County the "James P. Stevens, Sr. Memorial By-Pass" and to erect appropriate signs or markers along this highway containing the words "James P. Stevens, Sr. Memorial By-Pass".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
