VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE CAPTAIN LESLIE "LES" J. COLNA, JR. OF JAMES ISLAND FOR HIS FORTY-THREE YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE HANAHAN AND JAMES ISLAND FIRE DEPARTMENTS, TO THANK HIM FOR HIS DEVOTED LEADERSHIP AS CAPTAIN, AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES FOR HAPPINESS AND SUCCESS UPON HIS RETIREMENT.
Whereas, the members of the Senate have learned with regret that Captain Leslie "Les" J. Colna, Jr. of the James Island Fire Department has announced his retirement on January 29, 2008; and
Whereas, it is with great pride that the Senate honors those South Carolinians who courageously give of themselves in protecting our neighbors, families, and friends; and
Whereas, Les has served as an emergency responder for forty-three years. He was a firefighter with the Hanahan Fire Department from January 1965 to May 1976. He then went to work for the James Island Fire Department in June 1976 until the present; and
Whereas, during this time Les has served as a firefighter, an engineer, as one of the department's first Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), as the department's first Crew Chief when the Mini-Maxi concept was initiated, as a Lieutenant, and as an Engine Captain until his retirement; and
Whereas, he served as Incident Commander at the James Island Fire Department before, during, and after Hurricane Hugo, and for many years he served as Battalion Chief of the 4th Battalion Volunteers; and
Whereas, Les has been a South Carolina Fire Academy Instructor from September 1973 until the present. He is currently serving as an Adjunct Instructor and Practical Skills Evaluator, is certified to teach over 25 Fire Academy courses throughout the State, and has accumulated many thousands of hours teaching and evaluating during the past 35+ years. He also is a certified American Red Cross First Aid and CPR instructor; and
Whereas, Les is married to Linda R. Colna, has four children, and five grandchildren. He currently lives on James Island and is an active member of the James Island Baptist Church, belongs to the James Island Masonic Lodge, the Omar Shrine Temple, the Charleston Rifle Club, and the Elks Club; and
Whereas, the members of the Senate wish to express their gratitude to Captain Leslie "Les" J. Colna, Jr. for his forty-three years of dedicated service to the citizens of Hanahan and James Island and to congratulate him on his retirement as Captain. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and congratulate Captain Leslie "Les" J. Colna, Jr. for his many years of dedicated service to the Hanahan and James Island Fire Departments, thank him for his devoted leadership as Captain, and extend best wishes for happiness and success upon his retirement.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Leslie "Les" J. Colna, Jr.
