A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND VISION OF THE FOUNDERS OF THE MATHER SCHOOL, OF BEAUFORT COUNTY, AND TO COMMEND THE MATHER SCHOOL LOW COUNTRY ALUMNI AND ASSOCIATES FOR PRESERVING THE HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL FOR POSTERITY.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to acknowledge the work of the Mather School Low Country Alumni and Associates Chapter to ensure the school's inclusion in the annals of black history and to have it recognized with equal significance to other schools of the Reconstruction Era; and

Whereas, based on her faith that God would provide for all His children, Mrs. Rachel Crane Mather, of Boston, Massachusetts, founded the Mather School, of Beaufort, in 1867, which grew into an accredited high school and junior college; and

Whereas, the Mather School, one of the first African-American schools in Beaufort, was established to prepare the daughters of newly freed slaves to teach; and

Whereas, in 1881, the school became part of the Women's American Baptist Home Mission Society and continued its perspicacious charge to educate African Americans until 1968; and

Whereas, students received a superior education along with religious studies, lessons in social graces, and practical skills in cooking, gardening, and sewing; and

Whereas, students came to the Mather School not only from the Lowcountry of South Carolina, but also from other Southern and Northern states, and even from Africa and Honduras; and

Whereas, the chapter plans its annual bell ringing on February 15, 2008, on the campus of the Technical College of the Lowcountry, formerly the Mather School, and the Mather Founder's Day Luncheon to be held on February 16, 2008, at the Officers' Club at the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort. The Honorable Joseph H. Neal, who attended the Mather School, will be the keynote speaker for the event; and

Whereas, the Mather School flourished for a century of educating African Americans, and the graduates earned not only a coveted diploma but also a reputation for being well educated, refined, and successful in every major undertaking of their lives. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor and recognize the accomplishments and vision of the founders of the Mather School, of Beaufort County, and commend the Mather School Low Country Alumni and Associates for preserving the history of the school for posterity.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Mather School Low Country Alumni and Associates Chapter.
