A SENATE RESOLUTION

COMMENDING THE CITY OF AIKEN AND THE FRIENDS OF HOPELANDS AND RYE PATCH FOR THEIR DEDICATION AND EFFORTS IN MAINTAINING AND DEVELOPING THE GARDENS.

Whereas, in 1970, the City of Aiken received the fourteen acre property known as Hopelands from the estate of Mrs. Hope Goddard Iselin; and

Whereas, this benevolent gift has served as an area of quiet repose and reflection in the heart of the City for more than thirty five years; and

Whereas, Hopelands has provided many hours of enjoyment and recreation for the citizens of Aiken and others by way of a weekly summer concert series, an annual display of lights at Christmas, as well as the display of memorabilia of the horse industry in Aiken in the Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, through the efforts of the City of Aiken and The Friends of Hopelands and Rye Patch, a group of citizens dedicated to assist the City in maintaining and developing the gardens, a new pavilion has been constructed in conjunction with the Roland H. Windham Performing Arts Stage, to better serve the needs of performing artists and the public at large. Generous contributions have been made by individual citizens and grants from The Hope Goddard Iselin Foundation, Bridgestone Firestone, and the Gregg-Graniteville Foundation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, commend the City of Aiken and The Friends of Hopelands and Rye Patch for their dedication and efforts in maintaining and developing the gardens.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the City of Aiken and The Friends of Hopelands and Rye Patch.
