VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE NEWBERRY COLLEGE FOOTBALL TEAM FOR CAPTURING THE 2006 SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE AND FOR ITS SEASON-ENDING NATIONAL RANKING OF NUMBER TWELVE IN THE AMERICAN FOOTBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION'S TOP TWENTY-FIVE POLL.
Whereas, the Newberry College football team captured the 2006 South Atlantic Conference Championship title and achieved a season-ending national ranking of number twelve in the American Football Coaches Association's Top Twenty-Five Poll; and
Whereas, triumphing in their first appearance in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division II football playoffs, Newberry College defeated Albany State University of Georgia 34-28 in the first round on November 18, 2006, at Newberry College's Setzler Field; and
Whereas, Newberry College later advanced to the second round of the playoffs, facing the University of North Alabama in Florence, Alabama; and
Whereas, the Newberry College football team, in a season of distinction, set numerous school records, including a best-ever 11-2 record, ten regular-season victories, and a sterling 9-0 record at Setzler Field, which further endeared the team to its fans and the Newberry community; and
Whereas, Head Coach Zak Willis was named South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year; eight players were named to the All-South Atlantic Conference Team; quarterback Josh Stepp was named South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and was a candidate for the Harlon Hill Trophy, given annually to the top college football player in Division II; Heath Benedict was named First Team Little All-American by the Associated Press and Daktronics; and Heath Benedict, Will Newell, Josh Stepp, and Ty Zimmerman were named All-State; and
Whereas, the Newberry College football team has brought tremendous excitement, attention, and pride to Newberry College, the City and County of Newberry, and the State of South Carolina, and the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to have this opportunity to recognize such a wonderful group of talented young athletes and their coaches. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and commend the Newberry College football team for capturing the 2006 South Atlantic Conference Championship title and for its season-ending national ranking of number twelve in the American Football Coaches Association's Top Twenty-Five Poll.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the President of Newberry College, Dr. Mitchell Zais; Athletic Director Andy Carter; and Head Coach Zak Willis.
