A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF CECILIA S. DUDLEY OF RICHLAND COUNTY, AND TO CONVEY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened by news of the death of Mrs. Cecilia S. Dudley on January 31, 2007; and

Whereas, born in Ancon Panama Canal Zone on June 17, 1912, Mrs. Dudley was the daughter of the late Maria Isabel Arias and Roger Marvin Smith; and

Whereas, a selfless and generous person, Mrs. Dudley touched countless lives throughout the world. In Panama, she established the National Union of the Blind; in the Philippines, she worked with the School of the Blind; and in New York City she served as a volunteer at Roosevelt Hospital's children's ward; and

Whereas, Mrs. Dudley left an indelible mark on the Columbia community as well. Devoted to helping others, she tutored blind students in Algebra and Geometry, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels, Providence Hospital, St. Joseph's Respite Care, and the Salvation Army; and

Whereas, a loving and devoted mother, Mrs. Dudley adored her two daughters, one son, and stepsons. Her life was also richly blessed by her eleven grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, a marathon swimmer and champion tennis player, Mrs. Dudley represented Panama in tennis at the Pan American Games in 1937; and

Whereas, deeply dedicated to her faith, Mrs. Dudley was a steadfast member of St. Joseph Catholic Church; and

Whereas, during World War II, Mrs. Dudley worked in the United States Army Censorship Office in Balboa, Panama Canal Zone, and was appointed director of the Panama Tourist Office in New York City in the 1950's; and

Whereas, though it is with heavy hearts that the members of the House of Representatives mourn the loss of this fine South Carolina lady, we celebrate her life full of service, faith, and love. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Cecilia S. Dudley of Richland County, and convey deepest sympathy to her family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Dudley's daughters, Clarita N. Riba and Priscilla Sims.
