A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MR. DEAN KAMEN, WORLD-RENOWNED INVENTOR, FOR HIS OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE AND FOR HIS MANY INNOVATIVE MEDICAL DEVICES, WHICH ARE EXPANDING THE FRONTIERS OF HEALTH CARE WORLDWIDE.

Whereas, Mr. Dean Kamen is an inventor, an entrepreneur, and a tireless advocate for science and technology; and

Whereas, his vast knowledge of the physical sciences, combined with his ability to integrate the fundamental laws of physics with the most modern technologies, has led to the development of breakthrough processes and products, improving the lives of thousands of people around the globe; and

Whereas, while still a college undergraduate student, Dean Kamen invented the first wearable infusion pump, now used in medical specialties as diverse as chemotherapy, neonatology, and endocrinology, and he currently holds more than four hundred forty United States and foreign patents; and

Whereas, Mr. Kamen has designed a portable dialysis machine the size of a VCR, a vascular stent that provides arterial support during angioplasty procedures, and the IBOT Mobility System, a balancing aid for wheelchair patients; and

Whereas, among his proudest accomplishments is founding FIRST, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, an organization dedicated to motivating the next generation to understand, use, and enjoy science and technology; and

Whereas, Mr. Dean Kamen was awarded the National Medal of Technology in 2000 by President Clinton for inventions that have advanced medical care worldwide and for innovative and imaginative leadership in awakening America to the excitement of science and technology; and

Whereas, in further recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the Lemelson-MIT prize in 2002 and inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2005; and

Whereas, continuing his quest to inspire high school students to pursue careers in science, Mr. Kamen is the guest speaker for the South Carolina Governor's School for Math and Science Foundation; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to have this opportunity to recognize Mr. Dean Kamen for his committed service and excellence in all that he undertakes. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor Mr. Dean Kamen, world-renowned inventor, for his outstanding accomplishments in technology and science and for his many innovative medical devices, which are expanding the frontiers of health care worldwide.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Dean Kamen.
