TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR ELOISE GREEN RIEL, OF SUMTER COUNTY, FOR HER OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO HER FAMILY, FAITH, AND COMMUNITY, AND TO CONGRATULATE HER ON BEING NAMED TO THE WOMEN'S HONOR ROLL OF SUMTER COUNTY.
Whereas, the fifth daughter of Meta Keels Green and William Wherry Green, Eloise Green Riel was born on October 28, 1919, in the Shiloh Community of Sumter County; and
Whereas, a Turbeville High School graduate, Mrs. Riel attended Columbia College and graduated from Columbia Commercial College with a degree in mathematics; and
Whereas, a true pioneer in her field and a lifelong learner, Eloise studied civil engineering at Central Carolina Technical College and in 2006 completed another advanced course in accounting at the school; and
Whereas, a devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Riel shared a loving, fifty-nine year marriage with her husband, the late James "Jim" Riel. Together, they were blessed with two adoring children, three grandsons, and three great granddaughters; and
Whereas, Eloise's exceptional work ethic made her a valued employee to many employers, including the state Highway Department, ECB Construction Company, and Plowden Construction Company. At eighty-seven years old, Eloise continues to serve as corporate treasurer of Plowden Construction Company; and
Whereas, taking on new challenges in fields that were typically dominated by men, Eloise is listed in Who's Who as the first female estimator of general construction in South Carolina; and
Whereas, selfless with her time and resources, Mrs. Riel and her husband anonymously provided full college scholarships to numerous students, asking only that they help another person when they became financially able. In 2006, Eloise and her daughter provided more than five hundred long distance telephone calling cards for troops in Iraq so that they could call their families on Christmas day; and
Whereas, a faithful member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, Eloise serves a membership secretary and sends weekly bulletins to college students and shut-ins; and
Whereas, on March 1, 2007, Sumter Volunteers added Mrs. Riel's name to its prestigious Women's Honor Roll of Sumter County and affixed her name to a plaque that hangs in the lobby of Patriot Hall in recognition of her many contributions to the Sumter community; and
Whereas, Sumter Volunteers established the Women's Honor Roll of Sumter County in 1993, when the group honored twenty women posthumously. Since that time, sixty-one additional women and four women's organizations have been honored with this recognition; and
Whereas, it is with great pride that the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives pause in their deliberations to honor this fine South Carolina lady for a life spent serving others with grace and great energy. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Eloise Green Riel, of Sumter County, for her outstanding contributions to her family, faith, and community, and congratulate her on being named to the Women's Honor Roll of Sumter County.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Eloise Green Riel.
