VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF JOSEPH HAMPTON, JR., OF RICHLAND COUNTY, AND TO CONVEY THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened by news of the passing of Deacon Joseph "Joe" Hampton on April 6, 2007; and
Whereas, Deacon Hampton was born on April 9, 1931 to his loving parents, Joseph Hampton, Sr., and Rosie Bell Howell Hampton; and
Whereas, as a child, Deacon Hampton joined New Light Beulah Baptist Church, where he was later ordained as a deacon and served on numerous committees, including the Land Search Committee for the present site where the church now stands; and
Whereas, continuing on in his faithful walk, Deacon Hampton later joined Union Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon until his death; and
Whereas, a 1951 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Deacon Hampton attended Benedict College and later graduated from Denmark Technical College with a diploma in barbering; and
Whereas, a true trailblazer in the barbering profession, he became the first African American Barber Inspector in the State of South Carolina and served as a charter member of the Palmetto Barbers Association; and
Whereas, a devoted family man, Deacon Hampton shared a loving marriage with his wife, Bernice Clark Hampton and adored his children, Olivia Fredericka Hampton and Joseph Clark Hampton. His life was also blessed with his darling granddaughter, Geneva Harrison-Hampton, and a large extended family; and
Whereas, though it is with heavy hearts that members of the South Carolina House of Representatives mourn the loss of this fine South Carolina son, his memory will live on in the lives of those who knew him best, and the impact that he made on his community and on the State will not soon be forgotten. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Joseph Hampton, Jr., of Richland County, and convey the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Bernice Clark Hampton.
