VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MARIE D. LEWIS, OF BEAUFORT COUNTY, FOR HER WORK AS NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF CHUMS, INC.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, taking pleasure in commending the worthy labors of our great State's sons and daughters, note that Marie D. Lewis, of Beaufort County, has done laudable work as national president of the nonprofit social and service organization Chums, Inc.; and
Whereas, formed in 1946, Chums, Inc., provides opportunities for women to meet in friendship and fun, to encourage a spirit of helpfulness, and to use their talents in service to the community. A promoter of civic, cultural, educational, and social improvement, the organization especially strives to enrich the lives of children by helping them develop to their fullest potential. This emphasis reflects the organization's national theme, "Listen to the Children"; and
Whereas, before becoming national president of Chums, Inc., Marie Lewis had already served as organizer and president of its Louisville, Kentucky, and Beaufort chapters. In 1998, the organization elected her its national financial secretary, and in 2004, she was elected national president, in which position she still serves; and
Whereas, presently owner and executive director of Sea Island Conference and Training Center, Ms. Lewis is not one to limit her community involvement to just one enterprise. In addition to her local and national work with Chums, Inc., she has lent her expertise to the boards of directors of Penn Center, Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce, Beaufort County Black Chamber of Commerce, Historic Beaufort Foundation, and Beaufort County Art Association; and
Whereas, the General Assembly is pleased to pause in its deliberations to recognize Marie D. Lewis for her many years of service to her fellow man, especially as seen in her work as national president of Chums, Inc. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Marie D. Lewis, of Beaufort County, for her work as national president of Chums, Inc.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Marie D. Lewis.
