VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND CELEBRATE THE SEVENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA STATE PARK SERVICE, AND TO EXPRESS SINCERE APPRECIATION FOR THE BEAUTY, RECREATION, AND INDUSTRY THE SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF PARKS, RECREATION AND TOURISM, THROUGH THE STATE PARK SERVICE, PROVIDES FOR OUR GREAT STATE.
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina commend the contribution that the South Carolina State Park Service has made over the last seventy-five years to enhance this beautiful State and to make the state parks a haven to our citizens and visitors alike; and
Whereas, in 1933, the South Carolina Legislature launched the South Carolina State Park Service by passing legislation that created "state forest parks," and by 1934, the State had acquired the first property for a state park, which became Cheraw State Park; and
Whereas, the first park to admit the public was Myrtle Beach State Park, which showcased the state's magnificent coastline and beaches, and before 1940, sixteen such parks graced the State as part of the Civilian Conservation Corps; and
Whereas, with the dissolution of the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1942, the State Commission on Forestry assumed management of the parks until 1967 when the newly created Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism began oversight of the parks; and
Whereas, today these parks cover more than eighty thousand acres in South Carolina with over three thousand campsites, and the State Park Service maintains more than one thousand five hundred separate buildings, including one hundred fifty-five cabins and eighty motel rooms; and
Whereas, the State Park Service also operates two eighteen-hole golf courses, one at Hickory Knob and the other at Cheraw; and
Whereas, state parks maintain more than three hundred miles of hiking and riding trails, two saltwater fishing piers, and one hundred fifty-six miles of paved roads and exhibit the beauty of forty-two ponds, twelve miles of beach, and ten lakeside parks; and
Whereas, preserving some of the state's most important historical sites and natural resources, the State Park Service includes two National Historic Landmarks, eighteen properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and ten Heritage Trust Sites; and
Whereas, state parks preserve outstanding examples of every era in our state's history, including the Native American shell midden at Edisto, the original settlement site at Charlestowne Landing, numerous antebellum plantations, a Revolutionary War battlefield, and the only preserved land battlefield of the Civil War in South Carolina; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives commend the South Carolina State Park Service for its commitment to serving more than seven million visitors annually and to sustaining, preserving, and displaying the state's wide range of natural diversity from the mountains to the sea. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and celebrate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the South Carolina State Park Service, and express sincere appreciation for the beauty, recreation, and industry the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, through the State Park Service, provides for our great State.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Chad Prosser, director of the South Carolina State Park Service.
