TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR BRANDON P. BROWN, OF GREENVILLE COUNTY, FOR HIS SUPPORT OF THE ANNUAL HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL CLASSICS, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM ON THE SUCCESSFUL WEEKEND OF EVENTS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were pleased to learn of the success of the annual Historically Black College and University Football and Basketball Classics, which drew over ten thousand people and was co-chaired by Brandon P. Brown; and

Whereas, the Greenville Classic held the weekend of November 3, 2007, was designed to empower Upstate students to realize their educational opportunities at post-secondary institutions; and

Whereas, for years, these events have celebrated the pageantry of the African American collegiate experience with events such as charity galas, Greek step-shows, tailgating parties, and the half-time battle of the bands, all centered around the football game; and

Whereas, co-chairman of the Greenville Classic Brandon Brown, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bennie F. Brown, Jr., of Taylors, earned a bachelor's degree in history from Paine College in Augusta, Georgia, and is currently a candidate for a master's degree in human resource management at Webster University; and

Whereas, from 2000 to 2003, Brandon Brown served as an admissions counselor at Claflin University, where he recruited high school students from around the country, and then returned home to work in the family business, Brown Funeral Home; and

Whereas, in 2004, he became the first African American to run for a seat in the United States Congress from South Carolina's Fourth Congressional District; and

Whereas, from 2004 to 2007, he served as executive director of Allen Community Development Center, and with Reverend Caesar Richburg, he co-founded the Upstate Black Family Reunion, one of the largest African American gatherings in the State; and

Whereas, in 2006, he joined Senator Joe Biden's presidential campaign and served as the Upstate coordinator and later the state deputy political director for Senator Biden's presidential campaign; and

Whereas, Brandon Brown serves his community by addressing issues involving health care, quality of life, hospice care, jobs, and education; and

Whereas, he is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, Carolina Association of Colleges and Universities, Greer Hospital Advisory Board, John Wesley United Methodist Men, and the Greenville Democratic Party; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly express their gratitude to Brandon P. Brown for his support of the Historically Black College and University Football and Basketball Classics and for his service to the citizens of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Brandon P. Brown, of Greenville County, for his support of the annual Historically Black College and University Football and Basketball Classics, and congratulate him on the successful weekend of events.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Brandon P. Brown.
