A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND JENNA HALLMAN, OF ANDERSON COUNTY, FOR HER FAITHFUL AND EXEMPLARY TEACHING AT CALHOUN ACADEMY FOR THE ARTS, AND TO CONGRATULATE HER FOR BEING NAMED 2008 SOUTH CAROLINA TEACHER OF THE YEAR.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were pleased to learn that Jenna Hallman, a science teacher in Anderson School District 5, has been named the 2008 South Carolina Teacher of the Year; and

Whereas, a ten-year teaching veteran with National Board certification, she earned a bachelor's degree from Eastern Connecticut State University and is enrolled in Clemson University as a candidate for a master's degree in education; and

Whereas, chosen from eighty-three teachers who represented the districts in which they teach, Jenna Hallman was selected by two independent screening panels composed of educators and private citizens with no connection to the South Carolina Department of Education; and

Whereas, although she teaches science, Jenna Hallman uses a variety of strategies to connect her lessons to science and integrates drama, dance, visual arts, and music. She has shared these strategies as a member of the leadership team in the Education Department at Anderson University; and

Whereas, she uses her strong connection with her community to involve her students in service projects, such as donating food, blankets, and toys to the humane society, collecting and delivering food to a local soup kitchen, making Valentines for the elderly, gathering supplies and writing letters to soldiers fighting overseas, and participating in a litter campaign on Earth Day; and

Whereas, in her role as South Carolina Teacher of the Year, Jenna Hallman will represent South Carolina's fifty thousand teachers by participating in a yearlong residency at the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement, by attending Notre Dame's prestigious three-day Excellence in Teaching Symposium, and by participating in Leadership South Carolina; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives congratulate Jenna Hallman for her selection as 2008 South Carolina Teacher of the Year, and are deeply grateful for her outstanding contributions to the children of our State, who are our future. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and commend Jenna Hallman, of Anderson County, for her faithful and exemplary teaching at Calhoun Academy for the Arts, and congratulate her for being named 2008 South Carolina Teacher of the Year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Jenna Hallman.
