A SENATE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF GREATER COLUMBIA ON THE OCCASION OF ITS FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY, THANKING ALL MEMBERS OF THE ASSOCIATION FOR THEIR COMMITMENT TO HIGH BUILDING STANDARDS, AND WISHING THEM MUCH CONTINUED SUCCESS.

Whereas, the first organizational meeting of the Builders Association of the Midlands included less than fifty members in assembly at Henry's restaurant in 1957; and

Whereas, the purpose of the meeting was to form a non-profit professional trade association with the intent of maintaining high professional standards in the residential construction industry; and

Whereas, currently, the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia boasts 1,400 builders and represents over 18,000 industry professionals involved in every aspect of home construction, design, financing, remodeling, building, and management; and

Whereas, the Greater Columbia Association is affiliated with the Home Builders Association of South Carolina, an organization the Columbia delegation was instrumental in organizing, and the National Association of Home Builders; and

Whereas, the Association is ranked by size in the top twenty of nearly 800 local Home Builders Associations throughout the country, generating over 14,780 jobs annually in the Midlands, earning $610 million in wages and $238 million in federal, state, and local tax revenues and fees; and

Whereas, on an annual basis, new homebuyers generate over thirty-six million dollars to the local economy; and

Whereas, the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia includes four counties in the Midlands; and

Whereas, today, the Association has expanded its mission from networking to include best practices, continuing education, homebuilding and design showcases, legislative advocacy, and copious charitable endeavors to benefit the community; and

Whereas, for the members of the Association, it is not simply constructing houses, it is building affordable homes for citizens across the Midlands. The Association's education programs are not only to help members, but also to help consumers. Greater public knowledge of standards and practices breeds more aware consumers ensuring higher quality workmanship; and

Whereas, members of both the community and the Association praise the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia for all that it has contributed over its fifty golden years of providing homes. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, congratulate the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary, thank all of the members for their dedication to the people of South Carolina and commitment to higher building standards, and wish them much continued success.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Michael T. Lowman, President of the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia and Mr. Earl McLeod, Executive Director.
