TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF DOUGLAS LOGAN TINSLEY OF CHESTER COUNTY AND TO CONVEY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the General Assembly was deeply saddened by the news of the death of United States Army Specialist Douglas Logan Tinsley of Chester County on December 26, 2006; and
Whereas, Specialist Tinsley worked as a medic with the United States Army's 509th Airborne Regiment based out of Alaska and was deployed to Iraq in October 2006; and
Whereas, selflessly giving his life for the betterment of this great nation, Specialist Tinsley suffered mortal wounds while bravely serving his country in the battlefields of Iraq; and
Whereas, a native of Newfoundland, Canada, he was a graduate of Chester High School, where he served as executive officer of the Reserve Officer Training Corps; and
Whereas, over fifteen hundred mourners attended his funeral, at which Reverend Chris Snelgrove and United States Congressman John Spratt spoke; and
Whereas, deserving of our nation's highest honors, Specialist Tinsley was posthumously presented with the Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Medal by a commander in the United States Army; and
Whereas, moving parts of the ceremony included remarks made by his former Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps commander, Master Sergeant Al Boyd, and Taps played on the trumpet by an Airborne soldier; and
Whereas, military officials presented Specialist Tinsley's mother and father with flags and gold star banners in honor of their son's greatest sacrifice and the last full measure of devotion to his country; and
Whereas, Specialist Tinsley's burial was in Chester Memorial Gardens with full military honors; there, he will be surrounded by others who have died so nobly serving their country as he did; and
Whereas, surviving Specialist Tinsley are his loving mother and father, Lori Fairfax Tinsley and Douglas Vance Tinsley, devoted fiancée, Sarah Rose Nelson, brother, Private First Class Ryan Tinsley, and sister, Kristen Tinsley, in addition to extended family and many supportive friends; and
Whereas, it is with heavy hearts that the members of the General Assembly mourn the loss of one of South Carolina's finest, yet it is with great pride that we honor this South Carolina son for his steadfast commitment to the protection of his fellow Americans and to the preservation of democracy worldwide. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Douglas Logan Tinsley of Chester County and convey deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Lori Fairfax Tinsley of Chester and Douglas Vance Tinsley of Rock Hill.
