A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND MR. JESSE TULLOS OF GEORGETOWN FOR NEARLY FOUR DECADES OF DEDICATED SERVICE IN THE FIELD OF JOURNALISM UPON HIS RETIREMENT AND WISH FOR HIM MANY YEARS OF HEALTH AND HAPPINESS IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly have learned that Mr. Jesse Tullos will be retiring this year from the media industry after nearly four decades in the media, the past eighteen of them being in South Carolina; and

Whereas, after gaining experience at newspapers in Georgia, Alabama, and Florida and working his way up from reporter to editor, Mr. Tullos moved to South Carolina in 1988 to become editor of The Georgetown Times and has served his newspaper and community well for eighteen years in that capacity; and

Whereas, under his leadership The Times on four occasions won the South Carolina Press Association's General Excellence Award and on two occasions its Public Service Award; and

Whereas, during his tenure as editor of The Times, Mr. Tullos individually won eighteen first-place writing-excellence awards and many second- and third-place awards from the South Carolina Press Association; and

Whereas, he has been diligent in making the public aware of important community issues, as when his work with The Times against the Georgetown County School Board for failing to follow the open-meetings law led to the election of a new school board and the appointment of a new superintendent; and

Whereas, his production of the 64-page bicentennial edition of The Georgetown Times in 1998 will provide future generations information regarding its history and the development of today's printed newspaper; and

Whereas, having made his mark and set the bar of achievement extraordinarily high for his newspaper, this icon of The Times will be remembered with admiration and affection by both staff and community for years to come. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and commend Mr. Jesse Tullos of Georgetown for nearly four decades of dedicated service in the field of journalism upon his retirement and wish for him many years of health and happiness in his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Jesse Tullos.
