A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONVEY THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF CLYDE PEARSON, OF SPARTANBURG COUNTY, AND TO EXPRESS DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened by news of the death of Mr. Clyde Pearson on January 30, 2007; and

Whereas, a heroic, life-long firefighter, Mr. Pearson tirelessly gave of himself to the cause of fighting fires for as long as he possibly could, retiring from volunteering as commissioner of the Westview-Fairforest Fire Department just weeks before his death; and

Whereas, Mr. Pearson first became involved in firefighting as a volunteer for the City of Spartanburg during World War II. After taking time off to begin his career, he became inspired to take up firefighting once again upon the burning of several houses in 1962 in the Drayton Mill village because of no firefighters; and

Whereas, instrumental in creating the Drayton Fire Department in response to those fires, Mr. Pearson became a constant figure within the station and earned the respect and admiration of the many men with whom he worked; and

Whereas, Mr. Pearson served as assistant fire chief and chief of the Drayton department before taking on the role of safety officer when his age prevented him from doing interior firefighting; and

Whereas, unable to give up his firefighting passion when he and his wife moved across town, Mr. Pearson transitioned into volunteering at the Westview-Fairforest Fire Department upon their move; and

Whereas, a firm believer in safety and training, Mr. Pearson's first concern was the welfare of the firefighters; and

Whereas, recognized for his role in helping the Drayton Fire Department grow into a productive volunteer fire department, Mr. Pearson was inducted into the South Carolina Firefighters Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, while it is with heavy hearts that the members South Carolina House of Representatives mourn the loss of this great South Carolina son, we pause to honor him for the countless lives he touched and the outstanding example he set for true commitment to one's community and one's cause. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, convey the profound sorrow of the House of Representatives upon the passing of Clyde Pearson, of Spartanburg County, and express deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Clyde Pearson.
