JOINING THE CONGREGATION AND FRIENDS OF BETHEL AME CHURCH, OF SUMMERVILLE, ON THE JOYFUL OCCASION OF THE DEDICATION OF THEIR NEW SANCTUARY BUILDING A MERE TWO YEARS AFTER THE TRAGIC LOSS OF THE FORMER BUILDING TO FIRE.
Whereas, on April 28, 2005, the Bethel AME Church building in Summerville was destroyed by fire; and
Whereas, Presiding Elder John Randolph and present pastor, the Reverend William R. Jones, led the congregation in the groundbreaking service for the new sanctuary less than a year later; and
Whereas, today, April 29, 2007, the new sanctuary building is complete and is dedicated to the glory of God as a testament of the Christian love and faithful determination of the Bethel AME congregation; and
Whereas, the Summerville church was organized in 1868, and has been a force for spreading and living the Good News since that time, in spite of a history marked also by the destruction of its first building in 1938; and
Whereas, the members of Bethel AME Church have once again triumphed, through the amazing grace of God, to rise from the ashes of destruction to lift their voices of love to the heavens; and
Whereas, it is an honor for the South Carolina House of Representatives to be a part of this triumphant day. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, join the congregation and friends of Bethel AME Church, of Summerville, on the joyful occasion of the dedication of their new sanctuary building a mere two years after the tragic loss of the former building to fire.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Reverend William R. Jones, on behalf of the congregation of Bethel AME Church.
