TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION RENAME THE "WALLACE RIVER BRIDGE" IN THE HOLLYWOOD SECTION OF CHARLESTON COUNTY THE "PETER MILLER BRIDGE" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS BRIDGE THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS "PETER MILLER BRIDGE".
Whereas, Mr. Peter Miller has operated several businesses along the Savannah Highway in Charleston County for more than fifty years; and
Whereas, during this period, he has been a pillar of Charleston County, having made major contributions to the local, county and state economies through his Exxon gasoline and convenience store, trucking-land fill company, package store, and entertainment/reception hall; and
Whereas, in the 1950s and 1960s, during the final days of the State's segregated past, "Peter Miller's" was one of the few entertainment establishments that African Americans could patronize in Charleston County; and
Whereas, the residents of Hollywood have benefited greatly from Mr. Miller's philanthropy, kindness, and can-do spirit; and
Whereas, it would be fitting and proper for the members of the General Assembly to forever recognize the many contributions that Mr. Peter Miller has made to his community by renaming the Wallace River Bridge in his honor. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request that the Department of Transportation rename the "Wallace River Bridge" in Charleston County the "Peter Miller Bridge" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this bridge that contain the words "Peter Miller Bridge".
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
