A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF REVEREND LEVI C. CHAVOUS, SR., OF AIKEN COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY, CHURCH, AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Aiken native, Reverend Levi C. Chavous, Sr., on April 8, 2008; and

Whereas, a graduate of Florida Normal College and Union Seminary with an honorary doctorate from Union Seminary for his dedication to equality for all, Reverend Chavous was active in the Civil Rights Movement and marched with late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and

Whereas, a devoted family man, he had a loving marriage with his wife, the late Lucille Sapp Chavous, and they had two fine children, Levi Chavous, Jr., and Zenobia Chavous Ferraro, and one adoring granddaughter, Stephanie Allona Chavous; and

Whereas, because he served with distinction in the United States Armed Forces, Levi Chavous, Sr., was offered a commission as an officer, an honor he declined in order to devote himself to the ministry of the gospel of Christ; and

Whereas, he served in numerous churches in Aiken before answering the call of Ridgewood Missionary Baptist Church in Columbia, where he faithfully led that flock from 1967 until 2007; and

Whereas, Reverend Chavous' forty years of ministry in the same church with harmony and vitality is a remarkable achievement that reflects the words of the sweet song writer of Israel in Psalm 133:1, "Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity"; and

Whereas, active in many community organizations, he served on the Board of Trustees of Florida Normal College and of Morris College, was a past president of the Fellowship Union, and founded the Ridgewood Foundation; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the legacy of service to the citizens of South Carolina left by Reverend Levi C. Chavous, Sr., and are saddened to learn of his death. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Reverend Levi C. Chavous, Sr., of Aiken County, and extend their deepest sympathy to his family, church, and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Levi C. Chavous, Jr., and Zenobia Chavous Ferraro.
