A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND IOLA PRINGLE WILLIAMS, OF BERKELEY COUNTY, FOR THE VITAL ROLE SHE CONTINUES TO HAVE ON THE PRINGLETOWN COMMUNITY, AND TO WISH HER WELL UPON THE OCCASION OF HER EIGHTY-EIGHTH BIRTHDAY.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to learn that Iola Pringle Williams of Pringletown celebrated her eighty-eighth birthday on May 15, 2008, and that she continues to have a beneficial influence on her community; and

Whereas, born in Pringletown on May 15, 1920, Iola Pringle was the fourth of ten children born to Geneva Yates Pringle and Enoch Pringle; and

Whereas, on October 12, 1937, she married her beloved husband Samuel Naham Williams, and they raised five fine children, Samuel, Jr., Betty, Horace, Deloris, and Lillian; and

Whereas, out of a desire to become independent and self-sufficient, Iola and Naham Williams opened their first Mom & Pop store in 1946, and by 1948, their entrepreneurial spirit expanded to include showing movies for the community; and

Whereas, her commitment to her community led her to engage in civic affairs, including human-rights issues, in the early 1960's, and in 1967 she began to work in the Office of Economic Opportunity and Outreach Program where she stayed for seventeen years before retiring; and

Whereas, Iola Williams traveled throughout the community to solicit food and clothing to help those that were most in need and also helped to organize the federal Head Start program in Berkeley County in 1969; and

Whereas, after her retirement, she continued to support others involved in the program and those who were seeking assistance from it; and

Whereas, for the community that has been so much an extension of her own life, Iola Williams with her husband Naham donated property to build the House of God Church in Pringletown; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are grateful for the life of Iola Pringle Williams, devoted to giving and to helping her fellow man, and wish her much happiness in the celebration of her eighty-eighth birthday. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and commend Iola Pringle Williams, of Berkeley County, for the vital role she continues to have on the Pringletown community, and wish her well upon the occasion of her eighty-eighth birthday.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Iola Pringle Williams.
