A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND WOMEN HONORING VALOR FOR THEIR WORK TO RECOGNIZE AND CELEBRATE AMERICA'S LIVING RECIPIENTS OF THE MEDAL OF HONOR.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to learn that Women Honoring Valor will host a luncheon at the Columbia Convention Center on January 20, 2010, in order to raise awareness of the 2010 National Medal of Honor Convention; and

Whereas, Women Honoring Valor is hosted by the Medal of Honor Society's 2010 Convention project, the Greater Columbia Marine Foundation, and a growing number of the ladies of South Carolina; and

Whereas, among those scheduled to attend the luncheon are South Carolina's former first ladies, Mrs. John C. West, Mrs. James B. Edwards, Mrs. David M. Beasley, and Mrs. Carroll C. Campbell; Dawndy Mercer-Plank and Judi Gatson of WIS television; Major General Stan Spears, Adjutant General of South Carolina; South Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean Toal; former Congresswoman Elizabeth Johnston Patterson; nationally recognized poet Kay B. Day; Emmy-award-winning journalist and New York Times bestselling author Rita Cosby; and at least three living Medal of Honor recipients; and

Whereas, proceeds from the Women Honoring Valor luncheon will be used to fund the Medal of Honor Society's 2010 Convention to be held in Charleston from September 29th to October 3rd; and

Whereas, in addition to the luncheon on January 20th, there will be a formal signing of a "Declaration of Gratitude for our fighting men and women" and comments from former television host Rita Cosby, Chief Justice Toal, Medal of Honor recipient and United States SEAL Michael E. Thornton, and others; and

Whereas, the General Assembly is grateful for the efforts of Women Honoring Valor to preserve an appreciation for the courage of the members of our Armed Services. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, commend Women Honoring Valor for their work to recognize and celebrate America's living recipients of the Medal of Honor.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Jacqueline "Jackie" Lauery Hearn.
