COMMITTEE REPORT

March 17, 2010

S. 1265

Introduced by Senator Coleman

S. Printed 3/17/10--S.

Read the first time March 10, 2010.

THE COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION

To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (S. 1265) to request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of South Carolina Highway 34 one-half mile in both directions from its intersection with South Carolina Highway 215, etc., respectfully

REPORT:

That they have duly and carefully considered the same and recommend that the same do pass:

LAWRENCE K. GROOMS for Committee.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PORTION OF SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 34 ONE-HALF MILE IN BOTH DIRECTIONS FROM ITS INTERSECTION WITH SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 215 IN FAIRFIELD COUNTY "TROOPER HARRY MCKINLEY COKER, JR. MEMORIAL HIGHWAY" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS ALONG THIS PORTION OF HIGHWAY THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS "TROOPER HARRY MCKINLEY COKER, JR. MEMORIAL HIGHWAY".

Whereas, Trooper Harry McKinley (Mack) Coker, Jr., of Fairfield County and formerly of Richland County died on June 21, 1989 at the age of twenty-seven; and

Whereas, Mack served with Senate Security for several years and was outstanding in the performance of his duties in that position; and

Whereas, he graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in November, 1988, and was serving with the Highway Patrol as a state trooper at the time of his death; and

Whereas, he died in the performance of his duties when struck by a car after he had stopped to investigate a motor vehicle accident in Fairfield County; and

Whereas, Mack was well-known to the members of the General Assembly and very well liked and highly regarded; and

Whereas, he was an outstanding and dedicated young man who had a very promising career ahead of him; and

Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to name a portion of South Carolina Highway 34 in his honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina request that the Department of Transportation name a portion of South Carolina Highway 34 one-half mile in both directions from its intersection with South Carolina Highway 215 in Fairfield County "Trooper Harry McKinley Coker, Jr. Memorial Highway" and erect appropriate markers or signs along this portion of highway that contain the words "Trooper Harry McKinley Coker, Jr. Memorial Highway".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
