TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR TOM BOLAND OF RICHLAND COUNTY UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AFTER FOURTEEN YEARS WITH DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES AND TO WISH HIM SUCCESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, born in Jacksonville, Florida, on December 2, 1942, the son of Mildred Urquhart Boland and Raymond Bullock Boland, Tom Boland moved with his family to North Augusta, South Carolina, in 1951; and
Whereas, upon his graduation from North Augusta High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1962 and was later a noncommissioned officer and served in Vietnam from 1965-1966; and
Whereas, Tom Boland earned a bachelor's degree in government from Sacramento State College in Sacramento, California, subsequent to receiving an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps; and
Whereas, he furthered his education at the University of South Carolina Law School, graduated in December 1978, and was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in May 1979; and
Whereas, after practicing law in Orangeburg where he served as a public defender for over five years, he moved to Conway to serve as the first full-time County Attorney for Horry County for four years and then returned to private practice; and
Whereas, he served as assistant general counsel and deputy general counsel with the Department of Social Services until he took a position as state attorney with the Child Support Division where he continued until his retirement; and
Whereas, furthermore, he has served his community in various capacities such as a city councilman of Orangeburg, the commander of his American Legion Post, the president of the Orangeburg County Historical Society, and a member of Kiwanis Club as well as in numerous positions with the South Carolina Bar Association; and
Whereas, in the fine and patriotic tradition of South Carolina, he served nearly twenty years with the 360th Civil Affairs Brigade (Airborne) at Fort Jackson after he received a direct commission as a captain in the Infantry Branch of the United States Army Reserve, and he ended his military career as the Deputy Brigade Commander holding the rank of colonel; and
Whereas, ever the adventurer, Tom Boland completed United States Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia, just four weeks from his fifty-seventh birthday, thus becoming the oldest soldier in the history of this demanding and elite military school; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives take special pleasure in pausing to note the outstanding humanitarian and civic service of Tom Boland and wish for him many years of enjoyment and rest in his retirement. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Tom Boland of Richland County upon the occasion of his retirement after fourteen years with Department of Social Services and wish him success in all his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Colonel Tom Boland of Richland County.
